Bendimahi Delta

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species'):
Species Current IUCN Red List Category Season Year(s) Population estimate at site IBA criteria met
White-headed Duck Oxyura leucocephala EN breeding - 14-20 breeding pairs A1, B2
Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris NT breeding - 1-2 breeding pairs B2
Common Crane Grus grus LC breeding 1993 4-6 breeding pairs B1i
Great White Pelican Pelecanus onocrotalus LC non-breeding - 300-2,000 individuals A4i, B1i
Pygmy Cormorant Microcarbo pygmaeus LC breeding - 5-10 breeding pairs A1
Armenian Gull Larus armenicus LC non-breeding 1984 2,000-3,000 individuals A4i, B1i

The current IUCN Red List category may differ from that which was valid at the time of IBA criteria assessment (2004).

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Habitat detail Reference area (ha) Actual area (ha) Habitat quantity (% remaining) Habitat quality (carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) Rivers and streams 0 0 moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat level 1 Threat level 2 Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications dams & water management/use - abstraction of ground water (agricultural use) happening now some of area/population (10-49%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Pollution agricultural & forestry effluents - herbicides and pesticides happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected-area designation Management planning Other conservation action Result
Most of site (50-90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place low
