Munzur Mountains This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species'):
Species Current IUCN Red List Category Season Year(s) Population estimate at site IBA criteria met
Caspian Snowcock Tetraogallus caspius LC breeding - 80 breeding pairs A3, B2
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus NT breeding - 10-20 breeding pairs B2
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos LC breeding - 20-30 breeding pairs B2
Yellow-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus LC breeding - abundant A3
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria LC breeding - abundant A3
Semi-collared Flycatcher Ficedula semitorquata LC breeding - 100 breeding pairs B2
Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris LC breeding - abundant A3
White-winged Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis LC breeding - abundant A3

The current IUCN Red List category may differ from that which was valid at the time of IBA criteria assessment (2004).

IBA Conservation

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment (most recent) State (condition) Pressure (threat) Response (action)
2016 very unfavourable very high low
Was the whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Habitat detail Reference area (ha) Actual area (ha) Habitat quantity (% remaining) Habitat quality (carrying capacity) Result
Wetlands (inland) Rivers and streams 0 0 poor (40-69%) moderate (70-90%) very unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat level 1 Threat level 2 Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use hunting & collecting terrestrial animals - intentional use (species being assessed is the target) happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Natural system modifications dams & water management/use - dams (size unknown) happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected-area designation Management planning Other conservation action Result
Some of site covered (10-49%) A management plan exists but it is out of date or not comprehensive Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
