The site includes a river and riverine forest, canals, pools, marshes, meadows, broadleaved forests and heathlands.
The site holds 20,000 or more waterbirds in winter, on a regular basis (including Anas platyrhynchos 25,940). Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Branta ruficollis (wintering); Aythya nyroca (1-10 passage individuals); Haliaeetus albicilla (wintering).

Forestry, industry, boating and recreation are the main threats to the site.
