Tirajana pine woodland

Year of compilation: 2000

Site description
Arid Pinus canariensis forest located in the south of Gran Canaria. Regeneration is very slow due to low humidity, and undergrowth is sparse. Human activities include stock-farming and forestry practices.

Key biodiversity
One of the priority areas to be improved as part of the Fringilla teydea conservation programme, which provides for the release of captive-bred individuals.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Forest-fires (both natural and man-made) are a major threat. Overgrazing by feral goats Capra hircus restricts vegetation regeneration. A conservation programme for Fringilla teydea polatzeki has run since 1991 (with LIFE funding in 1995 and 1996).
