Nawalparasi forests

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2005 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species'):
Species Current IUCN Red List Category Season Year(s) Population estimate at site IBA criteria met
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus VU non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
Red-headed Vulture Sarcogyps calvus CR non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
White-rumped Vulture Gyps bengalensis CR breeding 2002-2003 71 nests A1
Slender-billed Vulture Gyps tenuirostris CR non-breeding 2004 uncommon A1
Cinereous Vulture Aegypius monachus NT winter 2002 unknown A1
Greater Spotted Eagle Clanga clanga VU winter 2004 present A1
Yellow-breasted Bunting Emberiza aureola CR winter 2004 unknown A1

The current IUCN Red List category may differ from that which was valid at the time of IBA criteria assessment (2005).

Year of assessment (most recent) State (condition) Pressure (threat) Response (action)
2011 very unfavourable very high low
Was the whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Scientific name Common name Reference population Actual population Units % of population remaining Result
Gyps bengalensis White-rumped Vulture 71 6 nests 9 very unfavourable

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Habitat detail Reference area (ha) Actual area (ha) Habitat quantity (% remaining) Habitat quality (carrying capacity) Result
Forest 0 0 moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat level 1 Threat level 2 Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance work and other activities happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
Natural system modifications other ecosystem modifications happening now whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration very high
Residential and commercial development housing and urban areas happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected-area designation Management planning Other conservation action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
