A wide plain to the south of the River Tiétar with many creeks and small ponds. The reservoir is surrounded by extensive dehesas and areas of grassland and arable cultivation.
This is an important site for breeding herons and raptors and wintering Grus grus. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aquila adalberti (resident).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threat is agricultural intensification as a result of more extensive use of irrigation, plans for a new road, powerlines and river regulation. There is a nuclear power-station at Almaraz.
