This area is dominated by spectacular volcano of Gunung Lewotobi, which has two peaks (Laki-laki (2263 m) and Perempuan (1703 m)) which erupted in 1971, 1972 and 1991(Monk et.al. 1997).
This area is one of five of important areas for birds and other biodiversities, and has some of rare bird species in Flores. Flores Green Pigeon Treron flores occured in tropical deciduous dry forest. Yellow-crested Cockatoo occured near the beach (Trainor & Lesmana 2000).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Illegal hunting and forest clearence for agriculture/plantation expansion (Trainor & Lesmana 2000).
4200 ha of this area has been proposed as Wildlife Sanctuary on altitude between 500-1704 m (MacKinnon et.al. 1982, Anon 1995b).
