Located around 43 km south-east of Kediri, it consists of 4 main mountains, Gunung Kawi (2651 m), Gunung Kelud (1731 m), Gunung Butak (2868 m) and Gunung Pitrang (2625 m) Anon 1989).

Proposed as nature reserve (50000 ha).
Habitat and land use
The area contains rare lowland and hill forests on volcanic soils (MacKinnon et.al.1982, Whitten et.al.1996).
