Located around 30 km north of Yogyakarta, Gunung Merapi (Merapi Mountain) (3150m) is one of the most active volcano in Java. In 1006, lava of Gunung Merapi buried the central capital of Mataram Kingdom and in 1930, 1369 people died because of Merapi's poisonuous gases (Whitten et al. 1996).
15000 ha of this area is proposed as Recreation Park which include Plawangan Turgo Recreation Park (131 ha) declared based on SK Menteri Pertanian No.437/Kpts/Um/8/1975 on 20 August 1975 and Tuk Songo Recreation Park (6.5 ha) declared based on SK Menteri Pertanian No.59/Kpts/Um/10/75 (Anon 1997, Anon 1998).
