Site description
Situated on a poorly-drained flood-plain, and underlain by wind-blown soils, the site consists of a salt-lake and surrounding arable fields and saline grassland. Human activities include grazing and arable farming.

Key biodiversity
An important staging area for migrating waterbirds, especially for Grus grus. Passage species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Anser erythropus (no data), Branta ruficollis (2-11 birds), Numenius tenuirostris (has not been seen for 20 years).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threat to the site is a lack of water, caused by inappropriate land-reclamation work and severe drought. As a result artificial water supplies have been provided since 1992. Wildfowl shooting is prohibited, and the enlargement of the existing protected area is underway. A management plan exists for the area.
