A freshwater lake, bounded on the northern and western sides by the dykes of the polders Oostelijk and Zuidelijk Flevoland (reclaimed in 1957 and 1968), and in the south-east by the mainland. The site lies adjacent to Lake Veluwemeer (042) in the north-east, and to Lake Nijkerkernauw (connected to Eemmeer, 045) in the south (with sluices at both sides), and is also adjacent to Polder Arkemheen (075) in the south. Sand extraction occurs. This site, together with site 042, formed part of a single, larger site (former site NL032) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
