Site description
This IBA comprises Du Gia proposed nature reserve, in north-eastern Vietnam. The topography of the site is steep and mountainous. The proposed nature reserve is bisected by a valley, which runs from north to south and contains provincial road 176. The highest areas in the proposed nature reserve are to the west of this valley, around Mount Pu Tha Ca. Elevations to the east of the valley are generally lower. Du Gia supports lowland evergreen forest, montane evergreen forest and limestone forest. On the higher peaks, there are some patches of forest charcterised by the conifer Fokienia hodginsii. The population of the proposed nature reserve is approximately 7,300 people, comprising members of the Hmong, Tay, Dao and Kinh ethnic groups. The lowland areas and shallower slopes of Du Gia have been almost entirely cleared and comprise a mixture of scrub and cultivation. The remaining forest occurs at higher elevations and has been heavily exploited.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Fokienia hodginsii occurs at Du Gia.
