Mount Parnassos

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A rugged area of tall cliffs, grassland and Abies and Pinus forests. The main human activities are tourism and livestock-farming.

Key biodiversity
An important area for raptors and alpine species. Breeding birds include four of the 10 species in Europe that are restricted (when breeding) to the Eurasian high-montane biome.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The main threats are from tourism development and hunting. A management plan for the Parnassos National Park is under preparation. Part of the area is a candidate SAC.

Protected areas
National Partial International LowPart of IBA covered by National Park (Parnassos, 3,513 ha). 2,650 ha of IBA covered by Wildlife Refuge (Asprochoma-Psilo-Prontoli-Kelari/Arachovas, 2,650 ha). 625 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Ethnikos Drymos Parnassou, 3,695 ha).
