It originates from the Guinea-Bissau Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and falls within the Atlantic, Eastern Central FAO ocean region. The site covers an area of 25626 km2 and borders the coastline. The depth ranges from 0 to 33 m, with a mean annual wind speed of 1.33 m/s and mean annual sea surface temperature falls between 25.07 and 27.54 °C.

Seaward extensions around breeding colonies; Ile Alcatraz et Ile du Naufrage, Arquipélago dos Bijagós, Iles Tristao include key near-colony areas for breeding populations of Brown Booby (LC) 4500-7200 individuals, Grey-headed Gull (LC) 2400-2400 individuals, Royal Tern (LC) 12540-21660 individuals, Slender-billed Gull (LC) 510-510 individuals and Caspian Tern (LC) 2520-4284 individuals.
