Funiu Shan is the highest mountain in Henan Province, and is the site with the largest area of forest and highest biodiversity in the province. The IBA is a water source for the Yangtze, Huang He and Huai He river systems, and is also the boundary between the warm temperate region and the subtropical region. Funiu Shan Nature Reserve is in western Henan, on the main extension of the eastern Qinling mountain range. It comprises 40,950 ha on the southern slope and 15,074 ha on the northern slope. Most of the IBA is above 600 m.
Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Ginkgo biloba, Cercidiphyllum japonicum and Emmenopterys henryi. Animals include Andrias davidianus, Panthera pardus, Lutra lutra, Felis temmincki, Viverra zibetha, Viverricula indica, Naemorhedus goral, Capricornis sumatraensis and Moschus berezovskii. The area has historical records of Panthera tigris amoyensis.
